Kudlich, Hans, b. Úvalno, Czech Republic (then Lobenstein), Oct. 23, 1823, d. Hoboken (USA), Nov. 11, 1917, politician and physician, became popular as "the Austrian peasants' liberator". 1848 youngest member of the Reichstag; in its 3rd session on July 26, 1848 he proposed the "abolition of the subordination of peasants" and the abolition of their obligations (e.g. statutory labour and the tithe), which became law on Sept. 7, 1848 in a modified form. Participated in the Vienna Oktoberrevolution in 1848, and in the 1851 Resurrection in the Palatinate, was condemned to death in his absence on March 10, 1854; fled to Switzerland, where he studied medicin. After his expulsion in 1853 practised medicine in the USA (with short interruptions) until his death.
