Kreuzenstein castle

Kreuzenstein Castle, Lower Austria, district of Korneuburg, in the municipality of Leobendorf. Romantically renovated castle, first documented mention around 1120, from 1258 onwards princely residence, blown up by the Swedes in 1645, remained a ruin until 1879, when it was renewed and furnished by Gangolf Kayser and Humbert von Walcher-Moltheim, who used Romanesque and Gothic elements collected from all over Europe and made the building an idealised model castle. It was completed in 1908 and contains valuable furniture and equipment.

Literature: Dehio-Handbuch Niederösterreich nördlich der Donau, 1990; K. Kirsch, Burg Kreuzenstein, 1966.
