Kreuzbergl Kreuzenstein

Kreuzeckgruppe

Kreuzeck Mountains, Carinthia, mountain range belonging to the southern Central Alps, composed of gneiss and crystalline slate, situated in an isolated position between the Upper Drau Valley, the Möll Valley and Iselsberg mountain, mainly composed of mica schist; its highest peaks are Polinik (2,784 m), Hochkreuz (2,709 m) and Kreuzeck (2,701 m). The area is sparsely settled and has only a few paths leading across the mountains. The western foothills form the border between Carinthia and East Tirol. The Kreuzeck cable railway starts in Kolbnitz and leads to the Roßwiese day-supply reservoir (205 m long, storage capacity: 204,000 m3). Major mountain refuges: Feldnerhütte (alt. 2,186 m), Polinikhütte (alt. 1,873 m), Salzkofelhütte (alt. 1,987 m), Anna-Schutzhaus (alt. 1,992 m).
