Kreudenfeuer

Kreud(en)feuer: In the 16th and 17th centuries people in Lower Austria and Styria piled up stacks of firewood on mountains, as ordered by their Prince. These wood piles, which were visible from far away and were to be lighted when enemies, especially the Turks, were approaching. However, this alarm system did not prove successful in case of emergency.

Literature: G. Otruba, Die Kreudenfeuer-Sicherung der Stadt Wien im 16./17. Jahrhundert, in: Unsere Heimat 27, 1956.
