Kreß, Wilhelm© Copyright Wilhelm Kress, photo around 1900 Kreß, Wilhelm, b. St. Petersburg (Russia), July 29, 1836, d. Vienna, Feb. 24, 1913, flight pioneer, engineer. Settled in Vienna in 1873, where he was the first to fly a freely suspended kite-model (1877); attempted the first take-off with a powered plane from the Tullnerbach reservoir (1901), but failed because the engine was too heavy. 2 years later the Wright brothers in the USA succeeded in making the first powered flight.
