Krauss, Clemens, b. Vienna, March 31, 1893, d. Mexico City (Mexico), May 16, 1954, conductor; husband of V. Ursuleac. Started his career in 1912 in Brno, Czech Republic(then Brünn); 1921 conductor at the Graz Opera, 1922 at the Vienna State Opera, later head of the conductors' class at the Vienna Musikhochschule*, 1924-1929 in Frankfurt, 1929-1934 Director of the Vienna State Opera (at this time also most important conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra), then of the Berlin State Opera and the Frankfurt Opera. Intendant of the Salzburg Festival, promoted its international renown from 1929; returned to Vienna in 1945. On his initiative the Salzburg Mozarteum was given university status; 1939 also established the traditional New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (first time on December 31, 1939, since 1941 on New Year's Day). Was a friend of R. Strauss and was regarded as his best interpreter. C. K. Archives in Vienna.
