Kohr, Leopold


Kohr, Leopold, b. Oberndorf near Salzburg, Oct. 5, 1909, d. Gloucester (United Kingdom), Feb. 26, 1994, philosopher und economist, reporter in the Spanish civil war. During World War II wrote articles against Hitler and for Austria´s sovereignity. Taught economics and political philosophy in New Jersey, Puerto Rico and Wales, participated 1967 in the founding of the small Caribbean state Anguilla (thwarted by British military action). K. coined the slogan "small is beautiful" and had considerable influence on F. Schumacher´s best-selling novel of this title. 1983 Right Livelihood Award.
