From 1919 worked in the Ministry of Education, where he founded the Department of Adult Education, 1926-1936 taught literary history in Danzig, 1936-1942 at the University of Münster, 1942-1945 and 1953-1969 Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Vienna, where he founded the Institute of Theatre Studies. His ten-volume "Theatergeschichte Europas" (History of European Theatre, 1957-1978) has become a standard work. Co-founder of the M.-Reinhardt research and memorial centre in Salzburg. Further works: Das Burgtheater, 1939; Hebbel und das Wr. Theater seiner Zeit, 1943; Lexikon der Weltliteratur, 1950 (with M. Dietrich); Das Goethebild des 20. Jh., 1953; Das Theaterpublikum der Antike, 1979; Das Theaterpublikum des MA, 1980; Das Theaterpublikum der Renaiss., 2 vols., 1984/1986. - From 1955 editor of the magazine "Maske und Kothurn".
