Kauer, FerdinandKauer, Ferdinand, b. Dyjákovičky, Czech Republic (then Kleintajax), Jan. 18, 1751, d. Vienna, April 13, 1831, composer of singspiels, conductor at the Josefstädter and Leopoldstädter Theater in Vienna and at the theatre in Graz. From 1790 especially renowned for his singspiels, worked with F. Raimund. Impoverished after 1820 because his music had become unfashionable. Is regarded as the model for the main character in F. Grillparzer's novella "Der arme Spielmann" ("The Poor Musician"). Works: more than 200 operas and singspiele (Das Donauweibchen, 1798; Das Sternenmädchen, 1801), symphonies, chamber music, masses, oratories, songs, lessons. Literature: K. Manschinger, F.
