Karlstein an der ThayaKarlstein an der Thaya, Lower Austria, market town in the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya, alt. 442 m, pop.1,596, area 48.87 km2, in the upper Thaya Valley. Karlstein is the home of the only technical and vocational school for watchmakers in Austria, a social centre (Sozialer Hilfsdienst Thayatal), and an upper-level secondary school of technology; industries include building firms and the production of precision mechanical parts. From the 18th century, centre of watch and clock manufacturing; castle (documented mention in 1112, altered in the Late Middle Ages and in the 16th century). Literature: K.
