Karl V, b. Vienna, April 3, 1643, d. Wels (Upper Austria), April 18, 1690, Duke of Lorraine; brother-in-law of Emperor Leopold I (from 1678), grandfather of Prince Karl of Lorraine and Bar. From 1663 in the Emperor's service, in 1668/1669 unsuccessful attempts to ascend to the Polish throne, became governor of Tyrol and the Western Habsburg dominions in 1679. In his capacity as imperial general (1675-1688) K. played a major r

ole in the defeat of the Turks in the battle of Kahlenberg on September 12, 1683, which ended the siege of Vienna, and in the conquest of Ofen in 1686; 1687 victory at Mohács.
