Joseph Ferdinand Salvator, b. Salzburg, May 24, 1872, d. Vienna, Aug. 28, 1942, Archduke of Austria, son of Grand Duke Ferdinand IV of Tuscany. Officer's training, 1911 field marshal lieutenant, from 1914 commander of a large group of the 4th army of the Dual Monarchy, he assumed command at the end of the year and had to resign again in June 1916 because of a serious defeat ("Brussilov-Offensive"). 1917 Air Force Chief of Staff of the Dual Monarchy. After the end of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy he signed the declaration by which the House of Habsburg renounced all participation in government and lived in Austria to his death.
