IrdningIrdning, Styria, market town in the district of Liezen, alt. 673 m, pop. 2,490, area 21.95 km2, traffic junction (Stainach-Irdning) in the upper Ennstal valley, at the end of the Donnersbachtal valley. - Local court, Federal Research Institute for Alpine Agriculture (Bundesversuchsanstalt für alpenländische Landwirtschaft) in Gumpenstein Palace (17th century), Höhere Bundeslehranstalt für alpenländische Landwirtschaft (secondary school of alpine agriculture), festival hall; wood processing industry (sawmill, carpenter shops, log houses), construction industry, summer tourism (39,153 overnight stays). - Gothic parish church (1453-1458) with Baroque extensions (1737-1740); Capuchin monastery (since 1711) in the former Falkenburg hunting lodge (built 1615); former place of execution with gallows chapel (16th or 17th centuries); Irdninger Moos flood plain on the River Enns. Nearby, village of Stainach with tithe storehouse (1597), Niederhofen filial church with frescoes (around 1500), Friedstein Palace (1595-1613), Pichlarn Palace (1551, hotel since 1992).
