Augsburg (Germany), Jan. 20, 1843, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Nov. 28, 1908, statistician and economic historian. Studied in Munich, from 1868 professor at the University in Innsbruck, from 1881 professor at the University of Vienna, 1884 head of the Central Commission for Statistics. In 1890 organised the first census based on the use of counting machines. Important statistics publications ("Österreichische Statistik", "Statistisches Handbuch"). Works: Dt. Wirtschaftsgeschichte, 3 vols., 1879-1901; Neue Probleme des modernen Kulturlebens, 1908; Tirolische Weistümer, vols. 1-3, 1875-1880 (ed. with J. v. Zingerle). Literature: NDB.
