IllmitzIllmitz, Burgenland, market town in the district of Neusiedl am See, alt. 117 m, pop. 2,517, area 91,85 km2; summer tourist resort (overnight stays: 147,729); wine-growing in the Seewinkel Area, a flat marshy area dotted with small lakes and ponds or Lacken (Zicklacke, Kirchsee, Wörtenlacken, etc); since 1993 national park "Lake Neusiedl - Seewinkel" (on the shores of Lake Neusiedl near Tadten (Great bustards) and around Lange Lacke with steppe flora; 9,500 hectares on Austrian territory; 12,700 hectares on Hungarian territory); aquatic bird sanctuary. - St. Bartholomew´s Fountain (artesian spring, supplies drinking-water to Illmitz); excavations dating from the Neolithic and Roman periods; parish church (consecrated in 1792) with high altar dating from the 17th century.
