Estoril (Portugal), Feb. 9, 1957, Hungarian politician and admiral. Rear-admiral and fleet commander of the navy of the Dual Monarchy, appointed vice-admiral Nov. 1, 1918. suppressed the Hungarian Soviet republic in 1919. 1920-1944 regent of Hungary. under pressure by the Entente powers, thwarted two attempts of King Karl IV (Karl I von Österreich) to recover the throne. After calling for special armistice terms for Hungary in 1944, he was forced to abdicate and was imprisoned by the Germans; after the war, exile in Portugal. Literature: P. Gosztony, N. H.
