Hofer, Franz© Copyright Franz Hofer, photo 1939 Hofer, Franz, b. Bad Hofgastein (Salzburg), Nov. 27, 1902, d. Mülheim an der Ruhr (Germany), Feb. 18, 1975, businessman and politician. 1933 was arrested in Tyrol as a supporter of the Nazis, escaped from prison and fled to Germany, 1938-1945 gauleiter in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Arrested by the US army on May 6, 1945; 1948 escaped from internment, disappeared and lived under an assumed name in Mülheim (Germany). Literature: M. Rauchensteiner, in: G. Wanner, 1945.
