Vienna, Jan. 18, 1968, theatre manager and artistic director. 1934 in the Federal Chancellery, 1935 press attaché in Prague, 1938-1945 in Dachau concentration camp; 1945 provisional director of the Salzburg Landestheater, 1946-1953 head of the Federal Theatre Administration, 1954-1959 head of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome, 1959-1963 artistic director of the Vienna Festival (tried to achieve the re-opening of the Theater an der Wien); from 1963 at the Vienna State Opera, 1963/64 co-director with H. v. Karajan, and 1964-1968 director of the Vienna State Opera, many awards, Officer of the Academie Française.
