HerzogbauerHerzogbauer, term for the peasant chosen by the free peasants (Edlinger) who was to carry out a rural democratic ritual at the Ducal Coronation in Carinthia at the Fürstenstein near Karnburg: The duke, wearing traditional peasant costume, was questioned by the Herzogbauer in Slavic and enthroned after presentation of a horse and a cow. The questions pertained to the duke´s Christian belief and his fair conduct of office. Reports by Johann von Viktring mentioned a symbolic slap on the cheek dealt to the duke by the Herzogbauer.
