Herberstein, Siegmund Sigismund Freiherr von© Copyright Baron Siegmund von Herberstein, wood engraving, 1559 Herberstein, Baron Siegmund (Sigismund) von, b. Vipava (Slovenia), Aug. 23, 1486, d. Vienna, March 28, 1566, diplomat for the Emperors Maximilian I. and Ferdinand I., travelled extensively and was a well-educated humanist author. 1516/17 and 1526/27 on diplomatic missions in Moscow. His report "Rerum moscoviticarum commentarii ..." ("Mouscovite Journey", 1549) is a valuable source of facts about cultural history since it contains very detailed descriptions.
