Herberstein, Baron Siegmund (Sigismund) von, b. Vipava (Slovenia), Aug. 23, 1486, d. Vienna, March 28, 1566, diplomat for the Emperors Maximilian I. and Ferdinand I., travelled extensively and was a well-educated humanist author. 1516/17 and 1526/27 on diplomatic missions in Moscow. His report "Rerum moscoviticarum commentarii ..." ("Mouscovite Journey", 1549) is a valuable source of facts about cultural history since it contains very detailed descriptions. The family history written by him and his autobiography (1553) are also of great historic importance.
