Herberstein, AdelsfamilieHerberstein, noble family originally from Styria; named themselves after H. castle in 1320 (Otto von Hartberg), which they still own. Almost 400 male members of the family are known; the family produced 5 governors of Styria, military officers of all ranks, including a field marshal, diplomats, civil servants, members of court society, a minister, priests and 6 bishops. The family were given the title of imperial counts in 1644. Important members of the family included Baron Siegmund von Herberstein and Count Johann Karl Herberstein. Literature: H.
