Vienna, Oct. 24, 1893, violinist, musical director of the court orchestra, son of Georg Hellmesberger sr., father of Ferdinand Hellmesberger and Josef Hellmesberger jr.; 1851-1859 conductor of light concerts and chairman of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde; taught at the Vienna Conservatory; from 1860 concert-master at Vienna Court Opera. In 1849 founded the H.-Quartet, which he led until 1891 (numerous premières). Literature: ÖBL; NDB.
