Hellmesberger, Josef sr., b. Vienna, Nov. 3, 1828, d. Vienna, Oct. 24, 1893, violinist, musical director of the court orchestra, son of Georg Hellmesberger sr., father of Ferdinand Hellmesberger and Josef Hellmesberger jr.; 1851-1859 conductor of light concerts and chairman of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde; taught at the Vienna Conservatory; from 1860 concert-master at Vienna Court Opera. In 1849 founded the H.-Quartet, which he led until 1891 (numerous premières).
