Helfert, Joseph Alexander Freiherr vonHelfert, Baron Joseph Alexander, b. Prague (Czech Republic), Nov. 3, 1820, d. Vienna, March 16, 1910; conservative politician, historian, permanent subordinate Staatssekretär in the Ministry of Education (1848-1860, afterwards its provisional director until its abolition in 1861); advocated equality for all nations especially in the field of education, founder in 1854 of the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung (Institute for Austrian History Research) and together with F.
