Helfert, Joseph Alexander Freiherr von


Helfert, Baron Joseph Alexander, b. Prague (Czech Republic), Nov. 3, 1820, d. Vienna, March 16, 1910; conservative politician, historian, permanent subordinate Staatssekretär in the Ministry of Education (1848-1860, afterwards its provisional director until its abolition in 1861); advocated equality for all nations especially in the field of education, founder in 1854 of the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung (Institute for Austrian History Research) and together with F. M. Schindler the Leo-Gesellschaft, Österreichische (1892).
