Hartzell, Eugene


Hartzell, Eugene, b. Cincinnati (USA), May 21, 1932, composer. After studies in the USA, 1956-1958 private studies with H. E. Apostel in Vienna. 1960-1974 journalist for the "London Times", translator, correspondent, and speaker for radio, film and television. 1974-1991 editor and announcer for Radio Austria International (foreign service of the Austrian broadcasting corporation ORF); also freelance work for the ORF; 1986 established the ensemble "Wiener Collage". His oeuvre (mainly chamber music) takes dodecaphony as its starting point and is also characterised by jazz elements.


Works: Seven Pieces for a Young Pianist, 1963; Nine Haikus, 1978 (baritone, clarinet); Episodes for Violin and Piano, 1982; Barbershopera, 1983 (operatic collage); Sonata for Cello and Piano, 1989; Short Takes, 1991 (variable instrumentation); Ein Mädchen, ein junger Mann, ein Autobusbahnhof, 1992 (operatic sketch); Concerto for Double Bass and Strings, 1995; Flute Quintet, 1997.
