Haller von Hallerstein, AugustinHaller von Hallerstein, Augustin, b. Ljubljana, Slovenia (then Laibach), Aug. 18, 1703, d. Beijing (China), Oct. 29, 1774, Jesuit missionary in China, astronomer. Member of an old aristocratic family originally from Tyrol. From 1738 in China, 1749 visits to Tartar tribes. Supported oppressed Christians in China. 1751-1758 visitator; 1757-1762 and 1766-1774 provincial of the Jesuit mission in the Far East. Author of numerous essays about China. Work: Observationes astronomicae ab anno 1717 ad annum 1752 a PP. Societatis Jesu Pekini Sinarum factae ..., 2 vols., 1768.
