© Copyright Haflinger Horse Haflinger Horse, small horse of compact build, name goes back to Hafling, a small village near Merano. After World War I high-quality breeding started in Austria, particularly in the Tyrol, in Vorarlberg and Carinthia. The Haflinger is 135-145 cm tall and weighs about 350-400 kg; Haflingers are always chestnut with a flaxen tail and mane; they descend from small packhorses crossbred mainly with Norikers and Arabs. All of today´s Haflinger horses are descended from a sorrel half-breed stallion born in 1874, which explains their uniform colouring. The Haflinger is very sure-footed, does not shy and is very versatile in use. Originally bred as a workhorse for farm labour and the military, it is today also bred purely as a riding horse (Arabo-Haflinger, light breed).
