Großarltal

Großarl Valley, province of Salzburg, southern side valley of the River Salzach in the Pongau region; it is drained by the Großarlbach stream. The Großarl Valley is the geological border between the Hohe Tauern and the Niedere Tauern mountains. It starts at the Arlscharte Pass (alt. 2,252 m) and extends to the villages of Hüttschlag (alt. 1,030 m) and Großarl (alt 924 m), the Liechtensteinklamm Gorge and to the point where the Großarl Valley meets the Salzach Valley, between the villages of Plankenau (alt. 756 m) and Niederuntersberg (alt. 741 m). A passage into the Maltatal valley leads over the Arlscharte, there is a pass into the Murtal valley at the Murtörl (alt. 2,260 m).
