Groissenbrunn


Groissenbrunn, Lower Austria, district of Gänserndorf, village in the municipality of Engelhartstetten; scene of the decisive battle between Otakar II of Bohemia and King Béla IV of Hungary over the Babenberg lands on July 12, 1260. The last Austrian high-free nobles (counts of Plain-Hardegg) were killed in this battle. In the subsequent Peace of Vienna the Hungarians had to give up Styria. - Parish since 1250, church (about 1780) heavily damaged in 1945.
