GreifensteinGreifenstein, Lower Austria, village in the district of Tulln, alt. 183 m, popular destination for day trips along the River Danube at its entry into the "Wiener Pforte"; cadastral district of the market town of St. Andrä-Wördern. - Greifenstein run-of-river power station (built in 1984, 293 MW), Konrad-Lorenz-Institute for Cognition and Evolution Research, hostel for young workers; hotel and restaurant industry. - Property of the diocese of Passau until 1803; castle ruin (first documented in 1135), enlarged in the 15th century, fell into decay after 1779, reconstructed in 1818 under the influence of Romanticism.
