Gregory V, b. 972, d. Rome (Italy), Feb. 18, 999, first German-speaking pope (from 996-999), previously chaplain in Maria Saal as Brun(o) of Carinthia, son of Duke Otto of Carinthia. G. was appointed pope by his imperial cousin Otto III, whose help he had to rely on to avoid being overthrown by his opponents.
