Gräffer, Franz (pseudonyms: Böttiger, Contée and others), b. Vienna, Jan. 6, 1785, d. Vienna, Oct. 8, 1852, author, librarian, publisher. Drew sketches of Vienna, wrote accounts of cultural history. published several pocket books and the newspaper "Conversationsblatt" in 1819-1821. Established the first Austrian encyclopaedia, the "Österreichische National-Encyklopädie", together with J. J. Czikann (6 vols., 1835-1837).


Further works: Kleine Wiener Memoiren und Wiener Dosenstücke, 5 vols., 1845/1846 (selection in 2 vols., 1918/1922); Vermischte Wiener Skizzen, 8 vols., 1845-1849; Wienerische Kurzweil, 1846. - Neue Wiener Tabletten, 1848.
