Ginzkey, Franz Karl© Copyright Franz Karl Ginzkey. Photo, around 1925. Ginzkey, Franz Karl, b. Pula, Croatia (then Pola), Sept. 8, 1871, d. Vienna, April 11, 1963, author. Professional officer until 1897; 1897-1914 civil servant at the Institute for Military Geography in Vienna, 1934-1938 member of the State Council (Staatsrat); helped found the Salzburg Festival, for decades member of the festival's board of trustees. G. also wrote poetry and novels in neo-Romantic style. Esp. renowned for children's books like "Hatschi Bratschis Luftballon" (1904) and "Florians wundersame Reise über die Tapete" (1931), which are popular to this day. Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1957. Edition: Ausgewählte Werke, 4 vols., 1960. Literature: K. Heydemann, Literatur und Markt.
