Gerl, Franz XaverGerl, Franz Xaver, b. Andorf (Upper Austria), Nov. 30, 1764, d. Mannheim (Germany), March 9, 1827, composer and singer (bass). Studied under L. Mozart in Salzburg, worked in the ensemble of E. Schikaneder from 1789, sang the role of Sarastro in the premiere of the "Magic Flute", from 1794 esp. in Brno, Mainz and Mannheim. W. A. Mozart wrote his aria "Per questa bella mano" for him (KV 612). Literature: ÖBL.
