Fritigil, markomannische Königin

Fritigil, Queen of the Marcomanni tribe,. Corresponded with Bishop Ambrosius of Milan (b. April 4, 397) in order to bring about the Christianisation of her tribe. In return for his help she persuaded her husband to subject himself and his people to Roman rule. The Marcomanni, who were put under the command of an individual tribune, are also mentioned in the Notitia Dignitatum. The Marcomanni probably settled in Pannonia I (province south of the Vienna woods, Burgenland and Western Hungary) shortly before 397.
