Vienna, March 8, 1878, 2nd son of Emperor Franz II (I), brother of Emperor Ferdinand I, father of Emperor Franz Joseph I. A member of the State Conference (Staatskonferenz), a consultative body which conducted the affairs of state for his brother, Emperor Ferdinand, from 1836-1848. Influenced by his wife, Sophie of Bavaria, he renounced his right to succeed to the throne in favour of his eldest son Franz Joseph after Emperor Ferdinand had abdicated in 1848. Literature: B.
