Frankenburger Würfelspiel

Frankenburger Würfelspiel ("Frankenburg Dice Game"): When Protestant peasants besieged Frankenburg Castle in May 1625 to protest the appointment of a Catholic priest, Count Herberstorff called on the town residents to assemble in the Haushamer Feld plain and despite his promise of amnesty, had the town leaders and committee members arrested and allowed two members of each group to gamble with dice for their lives. Seventeen peasants were hanged. This illegal act triggered the great Upper Austrian peasants' revolt of 1625/1626. In remembrance of the event, a festival has been held every other year since 1925 near Leitrachstätten. Peasants' Revolts.
