Etzel, Karl von© Copyright Karl von Etzel. Xylograph. Etzel, Karl von, b. Heilbronn (Germany), Jan. 6, 1812, d. Kemmelbach (Lower Austria), May 2, 1865, railway engineer and architect. 1839-1843 lived in Vienna and built the Dianabad swimming pool, designed numerous railway lines in Württemberg, Switzerland, Hungary and Croatia. 1859 became general director of construction for the southern State Railways. He did not live to see the completion of the Brenner railway (1864-1867), which he had designed. Literature: ÖBL; NDB.
