Employment Rate (labour force participation rate) is the proportion of Labour Force of the resident population. The employment rate is often differentiated by age or sex and constitutes a significant indicator for the absorptive capacity of the labour market and for the culturally and socially determined employment pattern of individual population groups. In Austria the employment rate amounts 46.1 % (micro census 1991), i.e. 46.1 % of the resident population is employed or self-employed (or unemployed), 53.9 % is not gainfully occupied (housewives and house-husbands, small children, school-children, students and retired persons).
