Eppan, HochadelsgeschlechtEppan, Counts von, family of the higher nobility, related to the Welfs. During the 12th century the most powerful family in South Tyrol. They named themselves after their castle near Kaltern. The centre of their power lay in the county around Bozen/Bolzano (South Tyrol), from the right bank of the Etsch at Kaltern north towards Meran/Merano, including the Ulten valley. The county around Bozen/Bolzano fell to the Counts of the Tyrol after the death of Count Ulrich von Eppan und Ulten in 1248.
