Eishockey

Ice Hockey was introduced in Austria as "Bandy" (played with a ball) before 1900, from 1922 played with a puck. Austrian teams were very successful during the period between the World Wars (European champions 1927 and 1931, 3rd in the World Championship of 1931), currently (1995) Austria is playing in Group A. In 1967, 1977, 1988 and 1996 World Championship games were held in Austria. The Austrian Ice Hockey Association (OEHV) was founded in 1912, it includes 142 clubs with 6,254 members (as of 1993).

Literature: S. Margreiter, H. Haiszan and R. Killias, Das große österreichische Eishockey-Buch, 1987.
