EinquartierungBilleting (quartering), the allocation of private accommodation to soldiers. Until the creation of barracks in the 17th and 18th centuries troops were lodged by billeting, even during peace time, and this remained standard practice during wartime. Until 1918 the municipalities in Austria had the duty to billet troops on the march. In the 19th century billeting houses were built in some municipalities to spare the civilian population the burdens of quartering. After World War II the occupying troops utilised public and private buildings for billeting.
