Edlinger

Edlinger, group of free and armed persons, who emerged in Carinthia in the 8th century. Their origin is unclear and controversial. It was the function of members of this group to welcome the foreign archduke to his realm. During the 9th and 10th centuries the noblemen of this group were given equal status with the nobility that had immigrated from Bavaria. The Edlingers later became free peasants with special status (landvogts) under the duke, some of them becoming knights in the 12th century. The Herzogbauer, who came from their midst, fulfilled a function in the ceremonies of appointing the duke Ducal Coronation at Fürstenstein and Herzogstuhl until the 15th century.

Literature: H. Ebner, Von den Edlingern in Innerösterreich, 1956.
