Eben am Achensee


Eben am Achensee, Tirol, municipality in the district of Schwaz, alt. 975 m, pop. 2,241 (1981: pop. 1,752), area 196.6 km2, bi-seasonal tourist centre (974,243 overnight stays) between the southern shore of Lake Achensee and Jenbach. - St. Notburga home of the Sisters of Mercy; Rofan cable-car to Erfurt mountain refuge (alt. 1,834 m); hotel and restaurant trade. In Bächental valley, oil shale extraction for the production of Tirolean mineral oil. - Since the 15th century a place of pilgrimage (grave of St. Notburga). Magnificently decorated Baroque parish and pilgrimage church (1736-1738), frescoes by J. G. Höttinger. Modern church by C. Holzmeister in Pertisau.
