Dopsch, AlfonsDopsch, Alfons, b. Lovosice, Czech Republic (then Lobositz), June 14, 1868, d. Vienna, Sept. 1, 1953, historian; grandfather of Heinz Dopsch. 1900-1936 university professor in Vienna. Revised the school of thought on the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages (evolutionary theory instead of catastrophe theory). Publications: Die Wirtschaftsentwicklung der Karolingerzeit vornehmlich in Deutschland, 2 vols., 1912/1913; Wirtschaftliche und soziale Grundlagen der europäischen Kulturentwicklung aus der Zeit von Cäsar bis auf Karl den Grossen, 2 vols., 1918/1920.
