Donau-Oder-Kanal

Donau-Oder-Kanal, project dating back to the 14th century, plans the creation of an artificial waterway (approx. 3,000 km long) leading from Vienna (Wien-Lobau) along the River March/Morava to Hodonin (Slovakia) with a further connection to the rivers Oder and Elbe. The Austrian section from Vienna to Angern was to be approx. 40 km long. However, only a few kilometres of canal bed were realised in the Lobau and in the south-western part of the Marchfeld region from 1939-1943. The sections of the Donau-Oder Canal that lie in the area of Groß-Enzersdorf have been used for swimming since 1960; sections of the banks have been used as building sites (Lake Mariensee).
