Deutscher SchulvereinDeutscher Schulverein (German School Association), founded in 1880 at the suggestion of E. Pernerstorfer. Its objective was to establish and maintain schools in German in language border areas. It soon became an instrument of the German-Nationalist movement, but split into several groups after 1886 ("Schulverein Südmark" at Graz 1889 for lower Styria, "Bund der Deutschen" in Lower Austria 1903). After World War I these associations enjoyed great popularity, maintained contacts with similar organisations in Germany and unified with them after 1938. Their successor organisations after 1945 were never of any importance. Literature: M. Streitmann, Der deutsche Schulverein vor dem Hintergrund der österreichischen Innenpolitik, doctoral thesis, Vienna 1984; Festschrift 110 Jahre Deutsche Schutzarbeit, 1990.
