Kammersänger* (tenor); from 1936 performed at the State Opera in Vienna and permanent member of the Salzburg Festival; gained renown especially as a singer of Mozart, played numerous roles in German and Italian pieces. Famous also for his performance as "Florestan" ("Fidelio") on the occasion of the re-opening of the Vienna State Opera in 1955; made numerous guest performances; married to pianist Hilde Berger-Weyerwald.
