Cumberland-Palais

Cumberland Palace, situated in the 14^th district of Vienna (Penzing): converted from an older palace owned by Count Silva-Taroucca around 1760. The palace was known under the name "Lothringerhaus" (Lorraine house), since it was the residence of the sister of Emperor Franz I (Franz Stephan von Lothringen). Later the palace was modified again and partly razed. In 1867, the palace and a neighbouring building became the residence of King Georg V of Hanover, who fought against Prussia on the Austrian side in 1866 and, after the defeat at Königgrätz, lived in Austrian exile under the title "Duke of Cumberland" after he had been expelled from his country. For many years the palace has housed the family´s collection of art, including the famous "Welfenschatz" (Welf Treasure). Today one part of the palace serves as the home of the Max Reinhardt drama school, another houses the Czech embassy.
