Chvostek, Franz senior


Chvostek, Franz Sr., b. Místek, Czech Republic (then Mistek), May 21, 1835, d. Vienna, Nov. 16, 1884, internist; father of Franz Chvostek Jr. Taught at the Josephinum (academy for medical officers in the army) in Vienna. "Chvostek's sign" was named after him, an overexcitability esp. of facial motor nerves in cases of spasmophilia and tetany so that tapping the face produces a twitching of the muscles.
