Canova, Antonio, b. Possagno (Italy), Nov. 1, 1757, d. Venice (Italy), Oct. 13, 1822, Italian Romantic classicist sculptor and model of Viennese Classicism. Created the funerary monument to Archduchess Maria Christina in the Augustinian Church, Vienna (1805) and the group "Theseus fighting the Centaurs" commissioned by Napoleon and later acquired by Emperor Franz I (staircase of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).
